The Wawenocks are a vanished coastal tribe, who occupied an area roughly equivalent to what is known as Midcoast Maine, between Casco Bay and Penobscot Bay. They developed a unique system of canoe routes through this region which consists of a series of long parallel peninsulas, the outermost tips of which bear the full fury of the open sea. Shining up through a veneer of coastal development are the traces of the old carry trails (ahwangans) that bypassed the rough water. Join Matt and Ozzie as they make a big loop to follow three of the many ahwangans in the region.
Matt Hopkinson makes a hobby of studying the rich Wabanaki culture of canoeing in Maine and New Brunswick. Old maps, old books and a surprising amount of local knowledge have come together to recreate the canoe routes of old. Once found, Matt likes to experience the routes firsthand.
